My fasting journey...

MY FASTING JOURNEY - a little summary

Back in 1997 (I was 14yrs old – Grade 9 at school) I did the liver cleanse diet.  This was to help my skin - as I struggled with acne.  I did it with my mum for support – cutting out meat, dairy, wheat, sugar, etc.  It didn’t phase me at the time, which I look back & think is laughable as my friends ate chocolate around me & I didn't flinch.  Mum helped a lot with food prep.  She is creative so the food was interesting.  I do remember a lot of cauliflower...

This year I have co-facilitated 2 online juice fasts which allows you to feel supported while fasting but in the comfort of your own home.

Throughout my teens I tried a lot of things for my acne so was used to cutting out things.  When I had to say goodbye to cheese I remember it being a very devastating day!  My salad sandwiches no longer had flavour (or so I thought at the time...).  I have learnt so much since then about awesome ways to upgrade them and add creaminess... hommus, avocado, pesto, beetroot dip, etc.

In 2010 in my final year of studying Naturopathy I remember doing a 3 day water fast.  I was paralysed in bed.  It was horrible!  I didn't prep properly – I don’t even know what program if any I was following?  I know in hindsight I wasn’t drinking enough water.  I was home alone & mentally had to talk my mind into moving my limbs.  It was so weird and scary.  I also remember choosing to climb Mt Warning on the last day of my cleanse.  Hmmm… not so smart?!  So I got scared about having energy for the hike and broke my fast with something that was being cooked for dinner that night which had dairy and wheat in it (homemade pizza from memory), classic unprepared fast exit.  Haha! I learnt so much from this fast.  I was juicing a lot at this time - often daily. This daily routine didn't help my fast as I now know I was so unprepared physically, mentally, emotionally & understand the depth of preparation required for a smooth & easier fast.

In 2011 I was living in Perth & went to one of Tyler Tolman's weekend courses called Heal Thyself Express. Following those 2 days I kicked off a 30 day cleanse.  It started with a 4 day colon cleanse and for the remaining days I ate 1 bag of pulse (mixture of nuts, seeds, dried fruit, etc) & organic apples if need be. I got really tired of the sweetness and just wanted green leaves. I noticed a lot during this time in relation to my hunger, the season I chose to fast (winter in Perth or just prior to), how socially ‘awkward’ it was for others - I wasn’t phased when joining people for dinner or at the staffroom table. I found the social aspect fascinating! I was there for the company but there was so much stigma (& curiousity understandably) attached to eating less or better still cleansing or fasting. This is also where my fascination of water consumption kicked in & how different I felt when really well hydrated. I was always a pretty good water drinker but drinking a lot (1 litre) first upon waking was fascinating to daily over a month.  It is now a comfortable habit.  I began to notice how well I felt once hydrated and how my hunger decreased.  FYI: Hunger is often confused for dehydration.

2012 I attended one of Tyler’s 7 day juice fasts in Bali. I was looking for something to complement my Naturopathy that wasn’t supplement based and discovered his fast. The 7 day fast ended up being 2 days juice and 7 days water.  My eczema was giving me grief at the time and the juices made it itchy, so I dived in as the environment was supportive. Holy moly! Wowza. I loved the enemas and began to understand physically, mentally and emotionally how they shifted things at another level.  I released something that resembled black tar on day 4 after stopping juices and transitioning to water.  Oh my the smell! It was fascinating.  I remember feeling so damn happy and also gained further understanding of the body and what it can store. During this fast I gained more understanding of emotions being integrated, episodes of lethargy vs heaps of energy, dizzy spells, euphoria, etc and how to handle them confidently.  I continued the water on the plane trip back to Cairns and for another couple of days in Cairns, until my house mates started cooking and I caved with coconut water & fruit. Pretty darn awesome post fast transition (exit) this time because I was mentally & physically prepared due to the education around breaking a fast. Community support filled so many of my senses while not eating along with sunshine and different daily practices. I understood the potency of support, community & 'feeding' the body in other ways.  It's not just about stopping eating for those newbies out there!  This is why I feel so passionate to share more on fasting and have created this event next year!

In 2012 I went back to the same 7 day fasting retreat in Bali as a volunteer and worked behind the scenes with 28 people juice fasting while doing adventure activities (to keep their minds busy) eg. whitewater rafting, hiking, etc. This was amazing to be apart of the team and learn more!

2014 I did a 21 day retreat on the Central Coast of NSW which integrated 18 days juicing.  Again I did 3 days juice and the rest water because I wanted to clear my eczema – it would come and go over the years, at times really bad outbreaks and then leave for years. Through exploring fasting & understanding my body more I now understand the triggers causing it & also what has needed to be released through fasting and cleansing to allow my body to repair the eczema long term.  The 18 days juicing was combined with Vipassana Meditation & Rebirthing (a breathing technique to release emotions).  Full on and all complementary to each other - a whole body overhaul. I learnt more about my body and mind on this fast.  Lots of emotional triggers and also the fastest clearing of a coldsore ever while fasting on water & actioning a salt flush.

Breaking my 18 day fast with fresh watermelon - eaten with my hands. Absolute connection and gratitude.

4 years into my business, in 2015, I was asked to support Tyler as his Naturopath at his 30 day Heal Thy Self program in Bali. This was again fascinating to watch 16 people go deep on a juice fast (juices for a few days of preparation followed by 18 days on water).  So many emotions and layers were released and processed. It was incredible to be observe and support. I really began to understand iridology from a completely different angle.  Became more deeply fascinated by the metaphysics of disease and really felt in awe of what it takes to run a retreat.  Bringing together so many practitioners, timetables, communication, juice/food prep, music, etc it’s all done with ease when the prep work is done – so much unseen work behind the scenes.  All while keeping the mood high and emotions supported.

In the last 4 years I have done a bunch of different 3, 5 & 7 day fasts always trying something different to discover the nurture balance.  Intermittent fasting has been an easy & accessible way of fasting day to day & giving my digestive system a break.  An aspect of fasting I am really intrigued by as a woman. I feel we need more yin as women. Herbal teas, softness, community, etc.  I feel so damn passionate about providing supportive fasts that encompass and really support the emotional needs while sticking to guidelines to get results. I simply don't believe in measuring the in-goings (juice/water) and out-goings (poo/gallstones/parasites) for results. I could talk for days about my love and fascination of fasting - oh wait I am next February!

I have one of my mini fasts documented on my blog from 4 years ago.

I am excited to let you know about a supported fast I have coming up in February next year.  A fully supported 4 day fast that really emphasises the pre and post aspect of fasting, while really immersing yourself in all of the beneficial aspects of a successful fast - fun, movement (yoga & qi gong), community, sunshine, hydration, education & more, with 2 qualified professionals.  Check out this amazing opportunity here!

In house Naturopath with Tyler Tolman

Happy Friday!

Just a quick note today to spread my good news that I will be spending a month in Bali in January working with Tyler Tolman at the Heal Thy Self retreat.  This retreat is a fabulous program designed to enable individuals with chronic illness to heal their bodies using fasting, colonics, massage and self care principles to achieve vitality and heal themselves.

I will be working as the in-house Naturopath while in Bali allowing individuals to safely progress through their 30 day fasting and cleansing program.  The support and the program are amazing and I am so proud to be apart of it.  Check it out here…  I feel really honoured to be able to be there for each individual and watch there lives transform!  I know I will equally learn a lot from being apart of the team.

It is around 3 and a half weeks until I leave for Christmas with my family in Perth.  I will be spending some delicious time with my gorgeous niece Willow while there and soaking up the Perth summer – which I love!  From Perth I will be flying straight to Bali to begin preparing for the intense and fulfilling month ahead.

Please make the most of these next 3 weeks and come and see me for a consultation, food plan or simply to top up on a sleep herbal or digestive support or perhaps some barley grass as an easy way to add greens to your routine during the festive season.

Keep in mind over the festive season to:

  • Drink plenty of water (add lemon to assist your liver health).  Remember 1L for every 22kg.  3L per day is a healthy estimate unless you are a particularly small frame or quite over weight and need to hydrate and flush your body.
  • Consider adding Juice Plus to your routine.  I have been feeling fabulous since trialling it on myself.  It is a combination of fruits, vegetables and berries all harvested and freeze dried efficiently to capture maximum nutrients.  It is a great addition to the season that is upon us while we may celebrate a little more than normal or have a few later nights, perhaps change our regular routine because we are away visiting family or simply want to add more nutrition into the routine that you have already, to kick start 2015 with a bang!  It gives you that extra spring in your step to allow your body to meet all the demands of the Silly Season (& life in general!).  If this interests you please call me to talk further on 0438733103 or email janellecarolyn@gmail.com

  • Every day ensure you are eating living foods.  Be it green smoothies, salads, steamed vegetables, even a simple dose of barley grass powder in water while travelling.  Consider serving a raw cake at Christmas (there’s a great recipe here), or a delicious selection of salads for Christmas lunch.  I will post a Christmas ideas list in my next blog to inspire a whole food Silly Season!
  • Move your body!  Keep up the walking, swimming, dancing, gardening, running around with the kids, skipping, bike riding…you name it, just move your body!  However short or long you can manage, just do something everyday!
  • Stress can increase at this time of year so don’t forget to belly breathe.  Continue 7 rounds of 7, or perhaps you have a meditation you enjoy?  This will make the busy-ness a whole lot easier.

Please note CHOCOLATE WORKSHOPS:

I would be happy to run private raw chocolate workshops with you & a few friends in the lead up to Christmas if you simply give me a call and organise a date that is suitable before December 20th.  I have run many in the past & they are always a real hit (especially in the lead up to Christmas) as everyone loves chocolate BUT may not know about the healthy guilt free version!  Nicole (from Heavenly Cacao, whom I have presented my workshops with in the past) and I are just in the throws of confirming our venue for a raw chocolate workshop on Sunday December 14th.

I will be posting regularly on Facebook and Instagram while I’m away from Dec 23rd- February 12th so please connect on both and follow the phenomenal transformations that will be happening as people release not only the physical but also the emotional and spiritual aspects that have been creating dis-ease in their life.

I don’t leave just yet!  I’m just getting excited and letting you all know I have 3 and a half weeks left for face to face consultations, until I’m back in mid February.  However, I don’t mind setting up Skype consultations while I am away.  I would be happy to.

Please also remember the morning activation sessions are changing to the Botanic Gardens next week!  I intend to meet at the Gardens Entrance on Collins Ave at 5:45am to enjoy a walk around the gorgeous suburb of Edge Hill for 30mins (our normal walking time) & then enjoy breathing and exercises in our new setting of the Botanic Gardens.  Please bring a towel, water bottle and gold coin donation as normal.  I will post a reminder on Facebook early next week…I look forward to seeing you there!

Lastly, I have decided to decrease my blog posts and newsletters to once a month from now on (unless there are workshops or events coming up that I want you to know about) as I know that the stress of checking emails is a reality.  I know that your inbox can fill up all too quickly these days!

Well….this turned out to be not such a short post after all!

I hope you have a fabulous weekend and I look forward to seeing you or hearing from you soon.

Janelle.

Be still for 14 days

I’m back!

I’ve had a long break from my blog. During the last four months I’ve had loads of ideas and experiences however have found myself judging everything I begin writing.

To be honest I have felt a little ‘stuck’ in my work and home life. I know I’m on the right path – sharing my knowledge and passion of health however I need to remember to tune in and confidently speak my truth.

There are endless recipes and health links I could share with you to inspire you to eat a better breakfast or change what you are snacking on but what about our thoughts? Our mind is such a powerful driver that if we ignore it, it can override any food choice we are making!

I often discuss this with clients and today feel it is important enough to remind a wider audience about it.

I encourage you to take on a challenge with me…

For the next 14 days sit down for 20mins and be still. You can call it meditation if you choose or perhaps you simply prefer to just sit and stare at the sky or the gorgeous big tree in your front yard, for 20mins. You may also choose to focus on your breath for 20mins with your eyes closed. Whatever it looks like, join me and together let’s ground ourselves and bring ourselves back to our own inner knowing.  Before bed each night seems to work for me.

Honesty is key! Speak from your heart and you will feel a massive release of truth. Or perhaps just a subtle inner knowing that is equally powerful.

It has been a challenging four months internally for myself despite being involved in some amazing things.  Do you ever find yourself just going about daily life and not tuning in to what makes your heart sing?

During the last 4 months I have spent 2 weeks in NZ hiking and eating fresh organic produce with my partner, attended a 21 day enlightenment experience retreat involving juicing, meditation, rebirthing and afternoon yoga. I have also been doing further study and updating my website while at the same time trying to implement a new routine that I love since opening up my practice from home and therefore working from home. It has been beautiful yet challenging because of my inner talk. I look forward to getting back in to the swing of things and writing more often.  I think my 14 day challenge which I hope you join me on, will realign us both to our inner knowing.

What would you like to know more about? Please reply in the comments below so I can support you on your journey. Also, I’d love to know if you are going to join me on my 14 day BE STILL challenge?

This picture was taken in NZ after climbing the saddle on our 5 day Rees Dart hike.  It takes me back to a very quiet still content place.  Where’s your content or happy place?

Preparation for a juice fast

It’s nearing the end of the year…can you believe it?!!

I’m loving the hot weather in Cairns and the build up to Christmas holidays with family and friends.  I have to say I also LOVE the peaches that are in season at this time of year!  I simply love sitting still and enjoying the smell of a ripe organic peach before launching in for my first bite

In the lead up to Christmas remember that it doesn’t need to be a time to stuff yourself silly on foods that make you feel bloated and yuck.  It can be a healthy, delicious and enjoyable time with loads of whole food treats and meals to share of greater nutrition value and flavour without the awful feeling post meal.  Please come in and see me for an appointment or ask if you are wanting help to ensure that you can enjoy your Christmas without the feeling of being bloated and hungover on sugar.

I’m really excited that I have been invited to assist in facilitating a juice fast in Bali, with Tyler Tolman and Don Tolman, before the year is out.  Wow!  What an opportunity!  This father and son pair have a passion for whole foods and fasting with an emphasis on the 7 principles of health.  Don has spent many years researching different cultures and their practices surrounding health.  Both have the most amazing knowledge and brains.  A wealth of information!

I leave for Bali tomorrow and I have been working my body towards a juice fast over the last 3 days.  These initial steps of transitioning to raw allow the body to begin detoxing with lighter, cleaner foods before stepping in to the realm of just juice and water.   For the first 2 days I have eaten only raw foods (eg. raw zucchini pesto pasta, lots of fresh fruit (watermelon, peaches, pineapple), dairy free/sugar free smoothies, acai bowls, lightly steamed broccoli, kombucha, etc).  Today I have transitioned on to juices and will continue on that while taking a colon cleanse powder blend with bentonite clay in it, to assist in drawing toxins out.  It goes without saying that hydration is key also!  I always have 1L of water upon waking and ensure that my fluids are kept up during the day.  I am consuming an easy 3L plus per day at the moment.

I will stay on this juice cleanse prior to arriving in Bali as I am wanting to be at my best to assist in the facilitation of the juice fast (i.e. I don’t want to be detoxing myself).  I am there to support others during their fasting experience and therefore want to be feeling on top of things by Saturday.  It is common to find the first 3 days of juice fasting the most challenging, hence why I have started on raw and transitioned to juice in the week leading up to the community juice fast in Bali, beginning on Saturday.

The group of people gathering together in Bali will be from all walks of life, with different health histories and different daily practices.  The detox symptoms of each and every one of them will be different.  If you are choosing to join us via the virtual online juice fast, please remember this and be kind to yourself.  We are all unique.

A supportive community makes a juice fast so much easier!  Come and join in the fun…here is the link to join the FREE 7 day juice fast in Bali, online…

http://www.onlinejuicefast.com/nov-fast

Fasting gives the digestive system a break allowing it to rest and repair.  This regenerates the organs and gives the body an opportunity to cleanse.  With the emphasis on the 7 principles of health (hydration, air, exercise, whole foods, passions, relationships and sunshine) along with enemas the body is able to cleanse and repair.  A can’t wait to support and share in this experience with others, over the next week!

I am looking at facilitating a juice fast in Cairns next year.  It is such a perfect location surrounded by delicious tropical produce.  If you are interested in joining the juice fast or have a great idea for a venue please reply below, comment on my Seeds Of Health Facebook page, email (janellecarolyn@gmail.com) or call me (0438 733 103).

Tyler and Rachelle Tolman have hosted many online juice fasts this year allowing the online community to grow with 1700 members currently.  It is a place where you can ask questions and share your thoughts.  A perfect platform to fast from if you are unable to join us in person.  Good luck if you’re choosing to join us on this amazing journey of fasting, which starts this Saturday!

I’m really looking forward to assisting those who are joining us in Bali this Saturday!  I also look forward to sharing my experience on the other side

Fasting

Fasting can either mean a water or juice fast.  A rest from digesting, which allows our body to put energy into healing and repairing.

This is my 5th fast.  In the past I have done a two 3 day juice fasts, a 30 day adventure (starting with a 4 day colon cleanse, a salt flush and then 26 days on Pulse – ask if you would like to know more), along with a 9 day fast (4 days of juice fasting followed by 5 days of water) and I am now at the tail end of a 4 and a half day juice fast where I intend to enjoy green smoothies and fresh fruit for another day and a half, making 6 days altogether of juices, smoothies, fruit and water.  My digestive system is loving the rest and I am feeling more agile and have a much clearer mind.

I have learnt a lot on this particular fast & have really enjoyed playing with new juicing recipes.  It has been interesting doing it with another and making juice for both of us as I have had to plan ahead to make 5.5-6L of juice per day.  The support has been great, knowing that someone else is going through the same experience as you, no matter how different it is.  Also, sharing a dinner or juice together and not being tempted by the smells coming out of the kitchen.  I highly recommend having a buddy!

It is my first fast after learning so much about fasting from Tyler Tolman in Bali last September.  My first 3 day fasts were done a while ago and I wasn’t aware of the importance of oil pulling, enemas, breathing, sunshine, Gwasha, exercise, etc while fasting.  I also didn’t have as much knowledge as I do now about breaking a fast.  During this fast I have felt more at ease and confident with how to approach a juice fast while fitting it in around a normal working week.  If you are just starting out with fasting, be willing to explore it and play with recipes and be kind to yourself if things don’t go to plan.  There’s always another opportunity.  Each fast is a chance to learn something new and remember for the following fast.  We should all be doing at least one fast a year or if you choose to one a month to give the body a greater chance to heal and repair.  Some people fast one day a week on just juices or smoothies, which is excellent, however I would still recommend a longer fast each year.

Here’s a glimpse into one of my days of fasting…Day 5.  I started my day with some coconut oil pulling, 1 litre of water (this should happen every morning whether you’re on a juice fast or not), some yoga and then an enema.   I have been feeling amazing on juice and the enema just topped it off!  This morning, being Saturday, was a perfect time to do an enema as I didn’t have to rush off anywhere.  After my enema I had a shower & used a cleansing ritual called Gwasha.  Gwasha is a specific mix of pure alcohol and aluminium free bi carb soda.  I learnt about this through Tyler Tolman and know that it cleanses the skin beautifully and should be followed by applying coconut oil all over the body and getting into the sun for a little while, to soak up some vitamin D.  So that is exactly what I did… while sipping on coconuts!

I would  liked to have been doing enemas every day on this fast but it didn’t happen due to a very busy week.  Enemas are essential if you are needing a good cleanse and trying to rid something acute or chronic within the body.

The things I have learnt this week are:

  • I realised how beneficial it was to have a variety of high water content vegetables so that your juice goes further when making such a large quantities.  For example, watermelon, pineapple, coconut water, cucumbers, celery, etc.
  • I have tended in the past to make my juice as needed (except for the 9 day fast with Tyler Tolman, as the juices were made for us).  However, I actually think making a larger quantity of a morning for breakfast and lunch, for 2 people, actually motivated me more and saved time with prep and cleaning up.  I just had to be organised.
  • Coconut oil pulling is such a fantastic technique to draw toxins out of the body.  This is done daily & can be continued when your fast is finished.  It is also known to whiten teeth.  You simply place 1 tablespoon of coconut oil into your mouth upon waking and swish it around for 5-20mins.  It is important to adopt this as part of a fast to allow the toxins to exit your system that bit faster.  There is a wealth of information here http://www.oilpulling.com or a great book available called Oil Pulling Therapy by Bruce Fife.
  • It has been excellent setting an intention each morning at the start of my yoga practice or during my breathing exercises while walking or sitting.  I would like to continue this.
  • It is really important to listen to your body on the fast and rest when your body asks for it.  Even if it is just a 10min rest.  I found myself doing this when I got home from work some afternoons and feeling recharged from it.
  • If you do feel like you just can’t continue on juice because you are too hungry the first thing you should do is drink 1 litre of water and wait 20mins, the other option is to have an apple as apples assist in cleaning the colon.
  • My body temperature dropped while fasting so it is important to plan fasting around the seasons or just remember a cardigan/jacket if working in air-conditioning.  Lucky I live in Cairns!
  • I have been able to develop a better relationship with food.  During periods of stress I tend to overeat, no matter how healthy the food is.  This fast has given me the ability to slow down and enjoy the smells and each ingredient and each mouthful of flavour (I tried to remember to do this with my juices).  My body performs a lot better on less.
  • Breaking a fast can often be tricky.  It is important to transition to smoothies and then to fruits and vegetables that have a high water content like watermelon, cucumber, tomatoes, pineapple, etc.  Raw salads with lemon juice and sea salt for flavouring, as well as home made vegetable soups.

I leave you with a gorgeous picture of the view from my back steps.

Please post a comment on the blog or Facebook if you have any questions/comments.

Happy juicing!
