Longevity

My favourite word of all time... LONGEVITY.  I love everything about this word. The positive frame it shapes around ageing, the possibilities, the cultural discoveries, the joy, the connection, the ease, the daily habits, the self awareness - it all lights me up. So let me shine some light on how you can enhance your longevity.

IMG_9813.jpg

Longevity simply means - a long duration of individual life.

I notice a lot of people have hang ups around the word ageing.  There is fear attached to another birthday, another year.  I don't feel the same way and I'm really proud of that.  Each year brings more lessons, more connection, more discoveries, more opportunities. There is so much to discover and learn on this planet.  Over the year I have become equipped with oodles of tools on how to support my body and mind, nourish my hormones and focus on the things that are important for healthy ageing.  If I need to shift gears because I'm noticing changes in my body - I can.  I want you to either develop or enhance your own personal awareness around longevity, leaning on me as a guide and support.

The above pic was taken recently on day 4 of the Seeds Of Health fasting retreat at Mossman Gorge. We had been fasting for 3 full days and I felt amazing.  My body always slips into a place of ease when fasting - less work to do and therefore more time for regeneration and repair (the next fasting retreat is September 12-16th, 2018 so keep your eyes peeled!)

Here are some hot tips to assist you with your LONGEVITY...

  • Fast!  If fasting for a day or more scares you then try intermittent fasting - Have an early dinner then hydrate and skip breakfast, being prepared to munch of something wholesome and packed with nutrition at brunch/lunch.  Fasting repairs your DNA - can you believe that?!  Longer fasts give you faster results - this September (12-16th) there is another fully supported fasting retreat coming up!  Or reach out for guidance prior to that, to fast at home.
  • Hydrate.  Good quality water is a must here.  If you are hydrating yet filling your system with chlorinated and fluoridated water then it's creating extra work for your body.  Find some spring water in your area or purchase a Zazen water filter - I personally love mine!  Have used it for 3.5 years now.
  • Support stress within your body. Exercise is a great way to counteract and release stress (move your body in a way you love...me personally - hiking, yoga & swimming).  Herbs are another great way to support your body through times of stress.  Superfeast herbs are something I use daily to tonify and support my system, in hot drinks or smoothies, however through a Naturopath consultation I can refine the exact ones that you need in a variety of forms.  An iridology assessment (picture of your iris) assists me with this understanding. A liver cleanse blend could be the place to start?!  Floating is another beautiful way to surrender & give back to yourself when feeling stressed.  If you are a first time user remember to make the most of my coupon code!  Or for your own at home remedy - meditate!  Stress ageing the body faster than anything else.  Meditation is a free, at-your-fingertips tool that can reverse this ageing and combat your stress.  Deepak is holding another FREE 21 day mediation challenge on March 19th, so make sure you sign up!
  • Eat plants!  Upping your plants - VEGETABLES AND FRUITS - definitely enhances longevity.  Adding enzymes, nutrition, vitamins, minerals, life force, hydration, trace minerals, antioxidants, etc to your system to repair your cells.  My social media channels hopefully provide inspiration for you here or my blog has recipes on it.  During a Naturopathic consultation the recipes, links & inspiration are more specific for you as an individual.
  • Tibetan Rites - these 5 exercises are known as the Fountain Of Youth.  I wrote a blog post about them a few years back.  The perfect tune up for your endocrine system each day.
  • Reducing and eliminating chemicals in your lifestyle. This is an enormous topic which I am super passionate about so perhaps another blog post needs to be created?  I have been chipping away at this in my own lifestyle for years.  Constantly upgrading my choices and switching to cleaner options for my body and the Earth.  For now I'll just list some of the alternatives I can support you with - chemical free menstrual cups and pads, chemical free beauty, perfume and cleaning products.  There is a whole chapter about Conscious Living (Chemical free living) in my Nurturing 9 ebook which you can download via my shop or on Amazon for your kindle.  Comment below or shoot me an email if you are wanting personalised support around this change to a chemical free lifestyle.  My Kitchen Detox packages are a great wholistic way to kick this change off!  Otherwise, a gathering with other women to discuss any of these topics is a beautiful way to spend the arvo - I love bringing people together to enhance their wellness.

Having others to share JOY with or lean on is ridiculously underestimated.  COMMUNITY is where it's at.  Coming together to share, laugh, cry, talk, inspire and be with is missing in our fast paced, online world.  Don't forget your neighbours.  The Blue Zones of the world - where the centenarians - thrive are fully aware of this concept.  I find the Blue Zones inspiring!  It's not all about how many carrots you eat, okay?!

5 Ways to Nourish your Thyroid

The thyroid is a butterfly shaped gland that resides in front of your throat and under your Adam's apple with an important function of producing and releasing hormones (T4 & T3). These hormones along with the well known pancreatic hormone insulin and cortisol are responsible for regulating your metabolism, providing energy to your cells & regulating your sex hormones.

The function of the thyroid is both simple yet complex. It begins in the brain with an initial signal from the pituitary gland to release a hormone that then stimulates the thyroid to produce and release its hormones. This is not the complete picture however, as we need to ensure the hormones have been converted into the correct form which allows the hormone to enter your cells and complete the required tasks, of metabolising, producing energy, and interacting with other hormones.  Ensuring this final step means no annoying symptoms like fatigue, poor memory, morning stiffness and difficulty losing weight. You don’t need to be experiencing all of the symptoms to indicate your cells have low levels of thyroid hormones.   Key symptoms to look out for include:

·      Lethargy

·      Sensitivity to cold

·      Heat intolerance

·      Mood swings

·      Headaches

·      Vertigo

·      Deafness

·      PMS

·      Voice change

·      Loss of libido

·      Susceptibility to viral infections

·      Unexplained weight gain

·      Difficulty losing weight

The next question is, how do we look after our thyroid and its hormones?  There are a number of important steps you can take to nourish and support your thyroid and improve these important last steps of the thyroids journey into your cells.

EAT FOODS THAT NOURISH

Include in your diet at least 3 times a week foods high in iodine.  Iodine is an essential mineral required by the thyroid for production of its hormones.

·      Kelp

·      Wakame/nori etc

·      Oysters

·      Cranberries

·      Mushrooms

·      Fish

·      Dulse flakes (yummy added to your salads and soups)

·      Sunflower Seeds

Another important thyroid mineral is selenium, which particularly helps with the conversion into a more useable form.  Foods high in selenium include:

·      Fish

·      Oysters

·      Alfalfa

·      Celery

·      Cashews/brazil nuts

·      Onion

·      Garlic

·      Broccoli

·      Mushrooms

FOODS TO AVOID can depend on the individual, however as a guide can include common inflammatory triggers, which can disrupt the balance of conversion, such as gluten, dairy, soy, alcohol and sugar.

*I would also add that flouride greatly affects our thyroid gland*

KEEP ON MOVING

Exercise helps stimulate thyroid gland secretion, ramps up the metabolism and improves your cells receptiveness.  If you are exercising why not get a dose of Vitamin D at the same time, and take a walk outside, this is another very important vitamin for hormone health.

GO ON A DETOX PROGRAM

This is one of my favourite suggestions, and something I like to do once every 6 months.  I don’t realise how sluggish my whole system has become, until a few days into the detox and my bloated belly disappears, I lose a couple of kilograms, and I start feeling great and full of energy again.  Detox programs allow your digestive system including your liver to go on a well deserved holiday.  The liver is always working hard, finishing off jobs for so many other systems including recycling and excreting unwanted biochemicals which include your hormones.  A good percentage of conversion to the active T3 hormone, used by your cells, takes place in the liver, and again selenium is a very important part of this process.  The liver is susceptible to stressors such as poor nutrition, chronic illness and exposure to heavy metals.  Allowing the liver and gut a holiday can ramp up these vital conversion processes again.

HEALTHY GUT COLONY

Your friends in the gut, perform many tasks and interactions for us, and one of them is converting your thyroid hormones into the active form utilised by your cells.  About 20% of the conversion is performed by your friendly bacteria.  They can help to reduce inflammation levels in the body, which if left unchecked negatively impact upon your active thyroid levels.  Inflammation causes a rise in cortisol levels, throwing things out of balance.  Regular consumption of fermented foods and drinks in your diet is a great way to maintain a healthy colony.  It is also important to bare in mind that especially after taking antibiotics and even during and after a detox program, a course quality probiotics can positively impact on your thyroid health.

SLOW DOWN AND BE MINDFUL WHILST EATING

Take time to enjoy every mouthful and chew with purpose.  This is the beginning of good digestion.  Having a strong digestive system is connected to having a healthy metabolism and hormone balance (as well as a strong immune system).  Eating slowly allows your body to register that food is going in, and gives it a chance to prime all aspects of digestion (stomach acid, digestive enzymes, gallbladder bile and many other chemicals).  Chewing and eating slowly, gives the body a chance to release sufficient hormones associated with satiety giving greater portion control.

MY HISTORY OF DEPRESSION AND HOW I FOUND JOY

I have been going through a tough time of late and have been spat out the other end thanks to 2 helpful things: A focus on joy and an amazing practitioner supplement N-acetylcysteine which assisted in me turning a corner.  I've decided to be really honest and raw in this letter as I feel why not?  What is there to hide?  I love when others are honest and real with me.  Also, I watched 2 TED talks on shame and vulnerability on Friday by Brene Brown, which I think just tipped me over the edge to share.

You see I have a history of depression.  It began in high school and has reared it's head every now and then over the years. After losing my partner of ten years at the beginning of the year, my foundation was a little shaky.  I have really tried to soldier on this year, but it's been tough.  I've been holding my head up and really trying to find my new groove, but every now and then (like last weekend) things just reached a point of overwhelm and I caved.  I had a number of signals leading up to the weekend, which I was trying to work around.  Finally I felt myself slipping - I know my signs and signals, so I thought, hang on, where is the joy in what I am creating?  What do I have the power to change?

Last Saturday I had a very real and honest chat with my cousin (who is also an entrepreneur) about how challenging things were for me at this point in time.  Speaking these challenges aloud led to a few major decisions, which took the pressure off - the pressure, I had place don myself.  Can you relate?

 Contemplating the possibilities...

Contemplating the possibilities...

This conversation led me to challenge my thoughts on my 9-day Renew You Retreat, quit Facebook (my personal account) and focus on what brings me joy.  "What do you really want to choose Janelle?" beyond all 'shoulds'.  I feel I have been running at full speed trying to catch up, while organising the retreat, while seeing clients, while trying to catch up on my blogs, newsletters, Facebook, Instagram - all that, while still needing to continue relief teaching to pay those bills which keep creeping in running solo and running a 9 day retreat.  I found myself drowning in my thoughts and looking for a way out.  As it goes with being an entrepreneur, no one else pays the bills but yourself, so when costs are high and your not making ends meet, what do you do?  You need to kick into logical mode and start making some honest shifts.

I set an intention last full moon, at a women's circle gathering.  It was to trust in the flow and be kind to myself.  So with all that was happening in my mind and the feeling of 'slipping'...I gave myself the permission to allow myself to not go ahead with my 9-day Renew You Retreat.  This decision has not been made in haste.

However, making a choice, this choice, and not simply soldering on, allowed me to wake up the following morning and feel whole again.  To feel like life doesn't need to be stressful.  To know that my choices create flow, ease and joy in my world.  To know that I wouldn't be chasing my tail for the next 4 months, while holding my breath.  I am grateful for that.  I have felt things were moving at a pace I wasn't comfortable with and I chose to honour that by stopping the retreat knowing I wasn't giving the very best of me.

To utilise all that I have worked so hard to create for my 9-day retreat I have been mapping out how I can share it in smaller snippets so that it is more accessible for you in the community and others outside the community.  I know that 9 days is a long time to step away for and possibly not achievable for everyone.  Please note though that it was designed for a very specific reason - to allow you the space and support, away from your everyday life, to educate yourself on the big picture so you feel empowered to implement new practices with understanding, in order to develop new habits to support you on your journey to abundant health.

I am noting all of the amazing individuals around me, which I also plan to collaborate with for mini workshops, events and shorter retreats.  I endeavour to bring each other together, create joy, share knowledge and strengthen our community of women.

So as you may have noted, I got overwhelmed, chose self-care and realised I needed to refocus - please support me in doing so by being as real, honest and vulnerable with me (as I have just been) in telling me what I can do for you.

My burning question that I have for you is what do you love about Seeds Of Health?  I want to know what you value most.

  • Do you value the Naturopath consultations and iridology?
  • Would you like more recipes on the blog?
  • Would you like more newsletters and sharing on the blog - understanding more about me, Janelle, the person behind the Seeds Of Health brand?
  • Do you value me sharing on Facebook and Instagram?
  • Would you appreciate more resources to assist you on your journey?  What kind?
  • I'm keen to share more videos on my YouTube channel (Janelle Twine) and my eBook isn't far away!

So, I'm so eager to hear from you in this Seeds Of Health community.  How can I support you more?

My intention in this community is to bring women together to empower and strengthen each other both with self-care principles and human connection.  I look forward to hearing from you, what you value most about what I offer and Seeds Of Health and in turn how I can support you more.

Breathing for our lymphatic system...plus a free video!

I would like to welcome Pettina to the Seeds Of Health space.  She is currently completing her Advanced Diploma of Naturopathy, Nutrition and Western Herbal Medicine - the same qualification I began on my travels around Australia back in 2007.  Together we are going to be discussing all things health and myself imparting what I know with her to enhance her knowledge and only add to what she is already learning on her health journey.  She will be assisting with aspects of the clinic and getting some packages together and learning the ins and outs of what happens both in and outside consultations - ordering, blogging, documenting, consultations, marketing, social media, accounting, etc.  What hat doesn't a small business owner and entrepreneur wear? :)

Please understand that although Pettina is going to be sitting in on as many consultations as possible it is always completely your choice, as the client, as to whether you choose to allow her to sit in or not.  There is no pressure.

So here she is...I have to say a big thank you to Janelle first and foremost, I am so excited to have been taken under her wing in the chance to expand my knowledge in the health and wellbeing industry. I am in the exciting position of beginning my clinical hours with Janelle as a student Naturopath and to give you a bit of an idea, let me share a bit of background on me.

 Pettina - Student Naturopath

Pettina - Student Naturopath

As so many Naturopath’s seem to find their interest in this industry, mine was piqued from illnesses in childhood, where I was forever going from doctor to doctor being treated for asthma.  It was again in my early 20s after having lost my mother to cancer after a 6 month battle when I was 17, followed by a stressful relationship, that I again found doctors lacking in being able to treat my symptoms, let alone get to the cause… I just wasn’t getting better.  With a sharp and open mind, I decided to take matters into my own hands, (with the help of some amazing Naturopaths of course) and my passion for health and wellbeing grew from there.  Now fast forward, I have almost completed a triple advanced diploma in Naturopathy, Herbal Medicine and Nutrition and married into a family of coffee farmers, finding myself surrounded by 85,000 coffee trees in Mareeba.

I cannot overstate the power of Nutrition in helping me find my path to greater health and happiness. Having said that I also love all natural modalities, from the body work of massage, bowen therapy, reflexology, cranial sacral to energetic medicine of homeopathy, theta healing, flower remedies, and every modality in between.  I look forward to having the opportunity of sharing with everyone my experiences as Janelle’s protégé.  I am finding myself connecting again with Doterra essential oils as well, my first experience with them was when I was managing a day spa on the Gold Coast, and had a Doterra rep offer me an Aroma Touch experience.  Afterwards I then knew for certain essential oils had a powerful presence in natural healing.

Janelle’s Nurturing 9 is powerful yet simplistic, inspiring healthy habits into our daily life.  This week’s focus is on the breath.  Lets all take a solid deep breath, appreciate the oxygen you’re breathing in for your organs and cells to utilise, feel the immediate de-stressing capacity it provides, purifying any toxic energy and filling us with simple life force.  Yogis incorporate pranayama into their classes, teaching the power of breath control, uniting them with the flow of poses and movement.  This practice helps us to switch on our parasympathetic nervous system, (the relax and digest system), altering the state of our nervous system.  I know I, all too often, get caught up in my determination to achieve my set tasks for the day - make my little girls lunch, put the washing on, phone the insurance company, go to work (another set of tasks), plan and cook dinner, do the shopping, fold the washing, play with my daughter, etc, that before I know it, the day is finished and my nervous system has been on high alert all day.  Slow, deep, rhythmic breathing allows us to be in the present moment, helps us to let go of overwhelming situations, and appreciate the little things in life.   Best of all they can be done any time of the day, anywhere!

Deep breathing can also help circulate our lymphatic fluid. This is important because unlike the cardiovascular system that has the heart as a pump to circulate blood, lymph relies on movement and breath to ensure our lymphatic fluid reaches our lymphatic organs for filtration.   Our lymphatic system is both our immune cells highway and sewage pipe.  Cells excrete unwanted toxic metabolic waste into our lymph fluid, along with dead cells and other cellular debris. Without effective movement, breathing and lymph circulation our other vital bodily functions would quickly shut down, due to trapped proteins and excess fluid.  Deep breathing, along with exercise, accelerates (up to 15 times) the normal rate in which our lymph can circulate and be filtered.

A deep breath should be felt within the abdominal area.  Holding the breath for 4 counts, help oxygenate the blood, and then exhale twice as long as the inhale, to increase the elimination of toxins.  This cycle of deep breathing enhances the health of our blood and activates our lymphatic system.  So easy yet so effective, I love it!   Here is a video Janelle has made on another breathing technique which is equally simple - Alternate nostril breathing - Nadi Shodhan.  She will be posting more videos on YouTube so keep an eye out!

2016...Simplify

How has your year started??

Mine began with quite a confronting situation which has settled in and begun to diffuse.  I feel I am beginning to digest that & enjoy a fresh start to the year.

My word for the year is SIMPLIFY.  This feels so damn good!  I have been making an effort to cull for the last year.  But this January my culling efforts went to a whole new level - both in my clinic and also my home.  I have been picking up objects - be it clothes, books, articles, CDs, crockery, etc and noticing if it feels joyful to keep it.  It is such an easy process yet one that hasn't felt so easy in the past.  I have often kept things for logical reasons rather than whether they bring me joy.  My world feels so much lighter because of this practice.  A simple example is culling my CDs. That has been my latest project.  As I drive to work each day I put a new cd on and notice whether it lights me up or not.  I have a whole 2 large cd wallets of cds I've collected over time and ones friends have given me before going travelling, etc.

I am starting to apply this to all areas of my life.  I am SIMPLIFYING my daily practices (cups of tea, mediation, whole foods, choosing less, enjoying more, reading, sitting with things more, shifting, feeling full with less).  Gosh its a gorgeous thing!  One that makes my world feel so full, yet I am doing less, have 'less' and am choosing less.  Does this feel like something which may benefit you?  What area of your life could you begin to simplify?

I am absolutely loving operating my clinic from town.  I drive to work, knuckle down, immerse myself in what I love and then drive home.  I try to leave work at work.  And so far the separation is fabulous!  Home life seems simpler.  I found last year I wasn't switching off from my business and having quality down time.  I am appreciating the amazing people I am working with and they are equally appreciating my contribution to the space.  Together we are better.

This year two of my larger goals are finishing my ebook and going ahead with my Renew You retreat in late September.  Both are EPIC!  There are only 8 spots left and there is a $500 discount until the end of February so please consider this chance for YOU!  Taking some time out to begin your very own HOLISTIC, SELF-CARE REVOLUTION.  Also note, that if you sign up with a friend you get a further $200 off!  You can choose to support and encourage each other.

Keep your eyes out on my website over the coming week as there will be a few exciting changes!  As well, look out for my newsletter which will be arriving in your mailbox anytime soon (if you are on my mailing list) updating you on upcoming events and some tips on hydration - a KEY nurturing element at Seeds Of Health.

Let me know in the comments below, what is your word for the year?!  I'd love to know :)

8 things I LOVE at the moment

1. This time of the year...

The anticipation and the excitement of Christmas is getting near.  Time in Sydney with my family is always fun.  We have such a fun crew with interests ranging from trampolining, quality food, ocean swimming, hiking, cannoying, camping, wine, riding bikes with my little cousins, dancing to animated kids film clips with my cousin Abbey & exploring new places both in and around Sydney.  Christmas is approaching and I leave this Thursday...that's right I can count on one hand!

I have a few new food haunts to check out with my cousin, some ocean swimming to do, some sipping of tea with aunties, uncles, etc and camping with my gorgeous Niece Willow who is 3 & I haven't seen her in a year!  I think she'll join the dance-offs with Abbey & I :)

My gorgeous niece Willow munching on strawberry rings last Christmas.  Perhaps you could try this with your kids this Christmas?

2. Having an office to go to work at.

The time has come where I needed to move my office and business out of my home.  And oh how good it feels to drive to work, focus and achieve and then drive home, flick the off switch and really focus on being present with cooking, connecting with others, swimming in the ocean, reading my book, staring at the sky, anything to create that bit of balance in my day/week.

3. The community around me

I feel so grateful for the women around me.  Those that brighten my day and lift me up.  People to share knowledge with, turn to for a boost or idea sharing.  Combining talents, picking mangoes, etc.  It's all so juicy and delicious.

4. Swimming in the ocean daily

Oh this is such bliss!  I just love floating and surrendering to the roll of the ocean.  Of late I try and go for a hike up Earl Hill first or a beach walk or run to the stinger nets and then jump in the ocean.  Laying on my back and surrendering to the roll of the ocean is something I have needed to do of late - surrender.

My gorgeous daily swimming spot - Trinity Beach.

5. Doterra essential oils

I am so pumped about these babies!  I just love how pure and nurturing these oils are both physically and emotionally.  I personally use them daily and love the community of women which is forming in Cairns.  These women are educating and empowering themselves to support both themselves and their family.  Whether that be online with the Life-force Collective or in person at different spots including a delightful mango farm at Yorkey's Knob.  It such a supportive group with a real softness and strength of community.  You can purchase your own oils at wholesale prices also!  Just contact me or go on to my shop.

6. Riding my bike (to Earl Hill)

There is a certain sense of freedom when I'm on my bike.  I love to ride and would like to ride more often.  It's simple, it's free and it's free-ing.

7. Fish oils

These babies were discovered at a recent seminar.  The purity of them is out of this world!  I really scrutinize supplements and not many get through the gates, especially fish oils that are incredible questionable for purity.  These are high in omega 3s which reduce inflammation in the body bought on through stress, poor eating habits, dehydration, over work, etc.  I have been taking them myself for the last 3 weeks and love how I am feeling.  Fabulous if you are currently suffering with dry skin, sore joints, more memory, feel irritable or have been working your butt off to get to the end of the year!

They are a Practitioner Only product hence why I they are not available on my online store.  I will need to prescribe them to you so give me a call for a quick free chat or pop in to 218 McLeod St, for a consultation if you feel you want to discuss more.

8. The opportunity & buzz I get from running workshops & the scope of what is in store for 2016!

I feel so excited for what lay ahead for 2016.  After delivering my most recent workshop on self-care I feel excited at what potential lay ahead for next year!  The products I have found over the last 9 years through both research and personal experience of trying them myself are now what I feel to be the best!  I really enjoy sharing all aspects of self-care and know that the Seeds Of Health community is building with the right tools to equip you on your very own HOLISTIC, SELF-CARE REVOLUTION!

Cheers to the end of 2015 and a very restful and Merry Christmas to you.  Thank you for being a part of this growing community.  I really appreciate you being here.  See you in 2016! xxx

Zane water filter, Doterra essential oils and roller bottles, organic tea for healing, FMTV health memberships, Norwex eco cleaning products are all apart of the tools which equip you for self healing.

Perhaps over Christmas lunch you could go around the table noting 3 things you are grateful for.  A lovely way to end the year.

What are you loving at the moment??  What are you grateful for?? I would LOVE to hear from you in the comments below or on my Facebook or Instagram page.

AMAZING CHAI & a fabulous Christmas gift too!

Recipe found at www.forkandflower.com (originally discovered through Pinterest - such an amazing invention!).

 Delicious home made chai mix...mmmm

Delicious home made chai mix...mmmm

Since discovering this recipe about 3 months ago I think I have made about 10 batches of this amazing blend which I store in my fridge and enjoy most mornings.  It really helped me transition off coffee - which wasn't serving me regularly.  I think it would make the perfect Christmas gift too!...served in a nice glass jar and all wrapped up with fabric and raffia on top.

1 cup organic black loose leaf tea (or English Breakfast works)

3 cinnamon sticks, broken apart and crushed with a mortar

1/4 cup fresh ginger, or you can use powder

1 tsp red chilli (optional depending on how much you like heat)

3 tbsp black pepper corns

2 tbsp cloves

9 star anise, roughly crushed into pieces with mortar

3 tbsp fennel seeds

4 tbsp whole cardamom pods, roughly crushed in mortar

3 tbsp coriander seeds

*Honey

1. Mix all ingredients into a glass jar with a lid (I use a large reused Niugini coconut oil jar)

2. Shake the jar thoroughly so that all of the spices mix together.

3. *Mix organic honey throughout the mix so that the spices look wet and are coated in it.  This takes a bit of work but it brings out all the flavours!

Let me know in the comments below if you also love this delightful chai mix?  And how you most prefer to serve it?  I use a plunger or teapot and once brewed I love it with a dash of rice milk.  If I haven't stirred any honey through I serve it with a little honey.

3 mistakes professional women make that keep them feeling tired, discontent and chasing their tail

1. Forgetting to care for themselves

This is a big one to consider.  It seems to be easy for us as women to consider others first.  Life gets busy and we put everything bar ourselves first - the blog is more important, the shopping needs to be done, I need to get back to that person, I don't have time for meditation, etc.  BUT, by nourishing ourselves our tank is full to give to others.

It is vital for us to make time to nourish ourselves - whether that be through movement and fresh air, taking time out to eat our wholesome lunch MINDFULLY without emails/phones/etc, or perhaps the practice of journaling for 10 minutes each morning.  However short or long, find something that suits your timetable and your needs.  What is your biggest need?  Is it time in nature, connecting with your partner, simply stopping and staring at the sky while enjoying a cup of tea, meditation, exercise, reading?  Make time for it.  It must be scheduled in and treated as a priority.

The element of self care and self love has been a very strong message for me this year.

The grounds of my 10 day silent retreat...space, fresh air, (snow!), gumtrees, birds & my own thoughts...

The grounds of my 10 day silent retreat...space, fresh air, (snow!), gumtrees, birds & my own thoughts...

2. Not listening to their own intuition

This is a big one for me.  I continue to flex my intuition muscle and strengthen it.  Trusting in the person that I am and the journey that I'm on, with my own internal compass as a guide.

As you know my retreat was going to go ahead in October this year, however it didn't.  I could have beat myself up and dwell on it - but to be honest I thought oh well I'll try again next year.  Sure, there were feelings of disappointment and failure, but for the most part, I thought, let's choose another date.

It was during my Vipassana retreat that I realised it was perhaps all happening too soon.  However, with the wheels in motion I just went with it and thought - everything is planned, so if it's meant to be it will be.

It was just after my Vipassana retreat that I closed the chapter of working with my original business coach.  I felt we weren't in alignment as I had originally hoped and this message came through so strongly while I sat for 10 days in silence.  So, I closed that door and thought "I've totally got this".  I've learnt so much thus far and now I'd like to really test myself and trust that inner confidence.  It wasn't long before I stepped into the unknown that a gorgeous friend recommended I connect with an inspiring soul (which I did via Skype on my birthday) who may just be able to offer a little insight to keep the momentum going.  Well...what a fabulous choice it has been, to close one door and watch another so perfectly open.  I am so glad that I spoke up and honoured that inner voice and intuition.

The biggest lesson I have learnt (and felt) from this sequence of events in the lead up to my 9 day retreat (which I'm sure you can understand is no small undertaking) is to really explain what I am offering from a very honest and open place.  Why do I feel this retreat is so valuable?  What is it about the Seeds Of Health evolution that makes me believe in this retreat so much?  Have I let my community know that every piece of the puzzle has been carefully considered in order to offer individuals the perfect chance at optimal health and the beginning (or continuation) of a journey which will support your entire being?

Perhaps I should honour that voice in my head and take this extra time to reassess all aspects of my marketing for the retreat?  Is my message clear?  Do people really know what they are going to receive as part of this 9 day retreat?

3. Not fully believing in themselves and showing who they really are

I simply love being me - when I allow myself to be me.  That feeling when I'm really owning who I am and speaking and acting from that place of truth.  When I'm making choices that show my whole self and my true self.

Where do you not believe in yourself or show who you really are?

This year I have really learnt the beauty of being soft on myself and listening to my inner voice.  It is okay to say no.  It is okay to juggle a little less.  It is okay to create space and simply do nothing.  Vipassana gave me the beauty of sitting with things.

Why have I not given myself permission to constantly choose from a space of softness and a space of honouring my true self?  Why could I not choose to soften when the wheels were in motion?

I now feel I am working from more of a heart space than a head space.  All the planning is done and now it is up to me to share with you all the details and the reason why this 9 day retreat will change your life!  Having spent almost 9 months planning and designing it, it is time to share those juicy details with you.  I have my first FREE event on Saturday 5th December, 2pm, Cominos House, so please note it in your dairies!

I look forward to seeing you there!

How to spend your morning, to change your day

Morning activation sessions are a powerful and creative way to start your day. They incorporate movement and mindfulness, leaving you feeling refreshed, calmer and supported. Being in Cairns, I’m grateful that I have the opportunity to spend so much time outdoors. The beach is nearby and I wake to join many other people enjoying a sunrise swim, walk, or other morning activity. I love using early morning mindfulness rituals as I believe it is what sets the tone for the rest of my day. Even when I’m not at home in sunny Cairns, travelling around in colder parts of the country and abroad, I make sure my day begins in a similar, mindful way.

What we do in the first hour of being awake can influence how we feel for the rest of the day. Complex morning routines, such as rushing around our homes half-awake, rarely afford us the time to nurture and nourish as we should.  I teach my clients that mornings are to be valued and enjoyed - whether you are young, retired, a mother or a business owner. True to my knowledge, I lead weekly morning activation sessions with a community of women in Cairns. On the days I don’t lead activation sessions, I take the time to move and nurture - hiking up one of the many hills, yoga, beach walking, preparing a nourishing breakfast or simply stretching.

What are morning activation sessions?

Activation sessions are a nourishing morning ritual that grounds the body and grows the mind. We practice conscious breathing, being present and creating intent. My sessions are a combination of rituals that will start your day in the best way possible. These include walking, hydration, warm-up, practicing the Five Tibetan Rites, sun-gazing, meditation and breathing exercises. All done while watching the colours on the horizon change. It’s a really special way to start the day.

So, what are the benefits?

These really are endless. Walking on the beach is a great way to connect to the earth, get the heart rate up, breathe fresh air and activate the digestive system. Hydration during these sessions is paramount. Bringing a drink bottle along with water and freshly squeezed lemon will ensure your body flushes toxins and is working in its most optimum and hydrated state. Stretching and moving will warm up the joints. Carefully selected joint exercises get your body flowing and ready for the day. The Five Tibetan Rites have the power to wake the chakras and energy centres of the body. These five exercises are known as ‘the fountain of youth’ due to the incredible benefit of balancing hormones, opening the heart and activating the thyroid. It’s a great strengthening workout for the core and glutes too! Sun-gazing is a practice to switch on your pineal gland. This helps regulate melatonin (sleep/wake chemical) and serotonin (happiness chemical), keeping your body’s natural cycles and patterns in check. Our pineal gland has a tendency to become calcified as we age and sun-gazing can help in de-calcifying the pineal gland. Lastly, the sessions are a perfect time to set intentions for the day. Each short meditation and breathing practice has a focus and offers insight for the day.  Silent mantras keep our busy minds focused. These, along with the breathing exercises, can be used at different times throughout the day to oxygenate our cells and heal and repair the balance in our nervous system. Mornings are a fabulous time to start over and try something new and different.

Connection and like-mindedness.

The added bonus of activation sessions is the community of women. Here is a little something from one of the ladies who regularly attends the activation sessions:

“Thanks for another beautiful start to the day yesterday. The morning activation sessions are such a lovely blend of movement and reflection through the meditations and connection with nature, self and community. The past few weeks sessions have really opened my day up well for being present, grounded and focused in my work as a massage therapist. I look forward to continuing this as my regular Tuesday morning ritual.”

Join us!

I run morning activation sessions every Tuesday morning from 6am-7am in Cairns. Simply come along and meet at the southern end of Trinity Beach. Look out for my Seeds Of Health sign as this is the meeting point. Feel free to phone beforehand to check details and don’t forget to bring a friend 0438733103. I look forward to seeing you there!

Breaking the fast...

Good afternoon from Bali...

Some of you may have been following the journey so far on Instagram or Facebook through my Seeds Of Health page or the Tyler Tolman page.  There have been many special moments thus far.

7 days ago, I started this post & here is what I had written.

...I have just ridden through the streets of Sanur, on the back of a scooter, in the sunshine after the rain cleared this morning.  Raw cake in hand, post Bali Buda visit, & I'm heading home for a massage.  Yes, it is Saturday afternoon & my afternoon off.  I will need to pop back to check on some clients later, about 6:30pm, but am soaking up the chilled arvo in the meantime.  Some blogging to do, some being at home to enjoy.

We are just over half way through, the month long course that I am apart of in Bali - 30 day Heal Thy Self, with Tyler Tolman.  The clients have been apart of a 'juice fast, water fast, education, enemas, digging deep, healing' environment.  Everything is provided for them to enable complete healing without the stress of organizing.  I am proud to be apart of the team who are facilitating such a program.  Being hosted in Bali we have also been able to incorporate some Balinese traditions into the program like a traditional Balinese welcome ceremony, visiting a water temple to cleanse, visiting a Balinese priestess to assist working through what is arising on the fast, as well as simply enjoying the near by island of Nusa Lembongan for some snokelling, sun and salt air.

Today was the beginning of releasing for clients.  You can read more about the process and the facilitators here…(http://thepowerofreleasing.com/about-releasing/).  Releasing gives clients a chance to emotionally release past hurts or 'things' from parents, friends, moments, past lives, etc that they have been holding on to (both consciously or unconsciously) & therefore contributing to their dis-ease and flow in life.

I love that this program is so powerful in its combination of modalities, healers, timing and thought processing.  Some of the modalities used are: massage, network chiropractic (which is totally different to chiropractic work - a lot more gentle bringing you back in to your body), reflexology, sauna, lucia light, releasing, DeMartini Method, craniosacral therapy and more.

Today...I come back to what I had begun 7 days ago & feel excited at the new chapter that these 15 courageous participants are now in to.  It has been an exciting day for them!  They have transitioned from water, on to juice.  Some of them, with their individual situations began to water fast on day 2 (day one we gathered together to meet and greet and enjoy a salad).  Others chose to participate in a 5 day juice fast before moving on to water.  We are on Day 21 of the program, which means that some of them have been water fasting for 20 days and others 15.  Where ever they are at we have encouraged them to listen to their body with the assistance of both Tyler and myself to assess their symptoms and maximize their opportunity to fast for as long as possible in such a supportive environment where they are nourished by others supportive and positive energy, the sun, guasha, education, filtered water, relaxation, enemas or colonics where needed, healing and again I repeat, support.  I know personally it can get quite tough to enjoy only water after so long.  It is therefore really important that we bless the water saying thank you, I am grateful, etc before drinking as our body is made up of a large percentage of water which impacts positively on our healing.

This is a huge deal, and a massive achievement!  No one is taking this lightly.  The participants have all done such an amazing job so far.  The biggest bonus is that they have had the support of others (both participants and crew) around them to succeed.

Sunrise at the beach in Sanur.  10 min walk from where the guests are staying.

Each day we have been starting with either a 5:30am gathering in the main room to make our way down to the beach for our morning activation (if the weather has allowed) or yoga at 6:30am in the yoga pavilion, after tongue scrapping, oil pulling and hydration.   Following each morning clients have gone back to their rooms to do an enema, listen to their huge collection of resources on their ipods, shower, guasha, lay in the sun, etc, depending on what is in store for the day.  Some days we have healing sessions where they move from one healer to another, other days is learning with different teachers in the main room (teaching the principles of health, trusting your intuition, future of business, human evolution, memory, DeMartini Method, etc) and then a mediation or singing session at night, unless there is an amazing doco to be shared - which happened a lot during the first 2 weeks.

One of the morning activation sessions held inside due to rain.  Tyler is playing the carillon bowl - which vibrates through your entire body.  It's beautiful after a meditation at the end.

Each client has had their own journey and processing to go through.  Highs and lows have been on different days (generally things will show up in reverse order working back one day for each year), some have had deep healings and many tears, others have felt sick and nauseous for days, others simply weak and tired, or ‘fine’.  No comparisons are made, simply the sharing of a unique journey in a collective space with full support.  We have tried to create a space where each can share how they feel each morning - the parasite stories are always interesting! :)  There have been a lot released!

I have really enjoyed being apart of everyone’s journey and supporting each person as much as possible through their own individual journey and letting them sit with things when they come up, not judging them or labeling them and allowing them to work through it and heal.

Juice!...after water is AMAZING!  I remember from my fasts plus the clients have been telling me all day :) (smoothie in the background which is for the crew)

Along with juice today, each client has also begun a 4 day colon cleanse with bentonite clay, psyllium husk and honey along with a specific 4 day routine that the ancient Egyptians used to cleanse the colon of heavy metals and all manner of other things.  Eucalyptus oil, peppermint castile soap, 10 lemons and acidophilus are all apart of the process - a different ingredient each day.  This will really pull whatever else may be in the body before slowly entering back on to fresh fruit, smoothies and raw vegan food next week with the amazing Chef Cynthia Louise!  The last part of this program around food is a very important one.  Slowly entering back on to food is so essential so the body doesn’t go in to shock due to the wrong foods or over eating.  It is important to go slow, smell the juice, taste small portions, chew properly, salivate, take it slow.  There is no rush.  Let the body enjoy the food through all of its senses (in particular sight, smell and taste).  Chef Cynthia has this covered and the clients are in good hands.  We are fortunate to be holding these education sessions around food in her gorgeous new kitchen which she is about to start filming in.  Most of you know I am a big fan of her and that I stock her cookbooks in my clinic.  She has some other fabulous e-books online (http://chefcynthialouise.com/shop/ebook).  Let’s support her and her message as she is pure in what she teaches around the topic of whole foods, no wastage, look after the planet, care for each other and share.

Fruit platter on the first day - with a no wastage using leaves as the underlay.  Fruit will be provided when the guests break their fast in 5 days time from juice to food.  But smaller portions to take it slow.

I hope you have enjoyed reading the journey so far.  I do hope to write again towards the end of this amazing 30 day program to inform you how things are wrapping up.  Please ask any questions or leave any comments below.  I would love to assist you with any queries you have regarding this amazing journey that I have been apart of.  The team has been fantastic!   And the participants…so inspirational!  This is not a small achievement.  Well done guys!

P.S. One of the participants Cazzie, has been writing an online journal each day of her fasting experience.  Check it out here

In house Naturopath with Tyler Tolman

Happy Friday!

Just a quick note today to spread my good news that I will be spending a month in Bali in January working with Tyler Tolman at the Heal Thy Self retreat.  This retreat is a fabulous program designed to enable individuals with chronic illness to heal their bodies using fasting, colonics, massage and self care principles to achieve vitality and heal themselves.

I will be working as the in-house Naturopath while in Bali allowing individuals to safely progress through their 30 day fasting and cleansing program.  The support and the program are amazing and I am so proud to be apart of it.  Check it out here…  I feel really honoured to be able to be there for each individual and watch there lives transform!  I know I will equally learn a lot from being apart of the team.

It is around 3 and a half weeks until I leave for Christmas with my family in Perth.  I will be spending some delicious time with my gorgeous niece Willow while there and soaking up the Perth summer – which I love!  From Perth I will be flying straight to Bali to begin preparing for the intense and fulfilling month ahead.

Please make the most of these next 3 weeks and come and see me for a consultation, food plan or simply to top up on a sleep herbal or digestive support or perhaps some barley grass as an easy way to add greens to your routine during the festive season.

Keep in mind over the festive season to:

  • Drink plenty of water (add lemon to assist your liver health).  Remember 1L for every 22kg.  3L per day is a healthy estimate unless you are a particularly small frame or quite over weight and need to hydrate and flush your body.
  • Consider adding Juice Plus to your routine.  I have been feeling fabulous since trialling it on myself.  It is a combination of fruits, vegetables and berries all harvested and freeze dried efficiently to capture maximum nutrients.  It is a great addition to the season that is upon us while we may celebrate a little more than normal or have a few later nights, perhaps change our regular routine because we are away visiting family or simply want to add more nutrition into the routine that you have already, to kick start 2015 with a bang!  It gives you that extra spring in your step to allow your body to meet all the demands of the Silly Season (& life in general!).  If this interests you please call me to talk further on 0438733103 or email janellecarolyn@gmail.com

  • Every day ensure you are eating living foods.  Be it green smoothies, salads, steamed vegetables, even a simple dose of barley grass powder in water while travelling.  Consider serving a raw cake at Christmas (there’s a great recipe here), or a delicious selection of salads for Christmas lunch.  I will post a Christmas ideas list in my next blog to inspire a whole food Silly Season!
  • Move your body!  Keep up the walking, swimming, dancing, gardening, running around with the kids, skipping, bike riding…you name it, just move your body!  However short or long you can manage, just do something everyday!
  • Stress can increase at this time of year so don’t forget to belly breathe.  Continue 7 rounds of 7, or perhaps you have a meditation you enjoy?  This will make the busy-ness a whole lot easier.

Please note CHOCOLATE WORKSHOPS:

I would be happy to run private raw chocolate workshops with you & a few friends in the lead up to Christmas if you simply give me a call and organise a date that is suitable before December 20th.  I have run many in the past & they are always a real hit (especially in the lead up to Christmas) as everyone loves chocolate BUT may not know about the healthy guilt free version!  Nicole (from Heavenly Cacao, whom I have presented my workshops with in the past) and I are just in the throws of confirming our venue for a raw chocolate workshop on Sunday December 14th.

I will be posting regularly on Facebook and Instagram while I’m away from Dec 23rd- February 12th so please connect on both and follow the phenomenal transformations that will be happening as people release not only the physical but also the emotional and spiritual aspects that have been creating dis-ease in their life.

I don’t leave just yet!  I’m just getting excited and letting you all know I have 3 and a half weeks left for face to face consultations, until I’m back in mid February.  However, I don’t mind setting up Skype consultations while I am away.  I would be happy to.

Please also remember the morning activation sessions are changing to the Botanic Gardens next week!  I intend to meet at the Gardens Entrance on Collins Ave at 5:45am to enjoy a walk around the gorgeous suburb of Edge Hill for 30mins (our normal walking time) & then enjoy breathing and exercises in our new setting of the Botanic Gardens.  Please bring a towel, water bottle and gold coin donation as normal.  I will post a reminder on Facebook early next week…I look forward to seeing you there!

Lastly, I have decided to decrease my blog posts and newsletters to once a month from now on (unless there are workshops or events coming up that I want you to know about) as I know that the stress of checking emails is a reality.  I know that your inbox can fill up all too quickly these days!

Well….this turned out to be not such a short post after all!

I hope you have a fabulous weekend and I look forward to seeing you or hearing from you soon.

Janelle.

Breathing

Good evening readers

Have you been stopped in your tracks recently and thought…where has the year gone?

Or perhaps where did last week go?

Where did today go?

I caught myself thinking this on Monday.  So much has happened this year and I can’t believe it is November already?!

Running my own business can mean that every week can look different and a routine is something that I’ve realised I love – I’m constantly aiming for a routine that works for me to ensure the weeks don’t pass me by.

Something that can easily slip from my routine is QUALITY breathing.  When we are busy it is easy to just keep DOING.  To not worry about our breath.  To not care about breathing – because our body can do it for us… but is it a quality breath?

Deep breaths and oxygenation are so important to enhance detoxification, keep our body energised, reduce inflammation and improve our mindset. Breathing is the pump for our lymphatic system – which cleans the garbage from our blood.

A breathing technique that I use at my Seeds Of Health Morning Activation Sessions is 7 rounds of 7. This alone is a fabulous tool for depression. By increasing the utilization of oxygen within our body we lower our blood pressure, reduce anxiety and panic attacks. Deep breaths allow oxygen to get to the blood and muscles therefore decreasing tension and inflammationThis in turn reduces pain and stress levels. In contrast short shallow breaths can have a negative impact on our mood and stress levels.

Belly breathing, deep breathing, uses oxygen efficiently.

Exercise is a great way of oxygenating every cell in our body and work the lymphatic system.  However, as a busy woman and someone who really respects Dr Libby Weaver’s work (Rushing Woman’s Syndrome) – please remember that fast exercise is not always the way to heal, regenerate and cleanse the body.  Sometimes those slower yet powerful forms of exercise like yoga can do more good for someone who is already anxious and tightly wound up.

Breathing stops disease of the mind. It can be as easy as slipping 10 deep belly breaths into your day. Or, you could try this easy and fabulous technique called 7 rounds of 7.

Breathe in for 7

Hold for 7

Breathe out for 7

Hold for 7

Repeat 7 times.

NB: The count of 7 needs to be even – 1 breathe per second. Observe the second hand on a clock while doing this to feel the rhythm.

In my clinic 7 rounds of 7 is a prescription for depression.  Whether or not you are struggling with depression, anxiety, high blood pressure, panic attacks, pain and inflammation in your body or a ‘monkey mind’ –  try doing 7 rounds of 7 twice each day for a week.  Notice how you feel and write your own experience below in the comments.

Begin to observe how you breathe. It all starts with awareness.

Additionally: To ensure you are breathing clean air in your office and home, you may consider investing in certain plants to improve the quality of your office air or air in the home. I have a Peace Lilly in my office to ensure my clinic air is being filtered.

Fans are also another fabulous way to electrify and ignite the air around you. Opening up the windows in your home for 10-20mins a day is another great way of energizing and cleansing your surrounding air.
