Is fasting really that hard?


The simple answer is a reset/reboot/detox/cleanse.

BUT, the more exciting & juicy answer is a letting go of the old to upgrade your current state of health. For a positive experience fasting should be done in a supportive & rich environment so that you fully understand what is important while fasting, so that there is joy & so that you have knowledge & support on hand if you are faced with a challenge or question why you are doing it. After a few fasts, some people may choose to fast alone at home, however some simply thrive in a group environment & simply find it a lot more fun!


What are the benefits of fasting? There is bottomless pit of benefits to fasting! Really. It’s just sometimes a challenge to actually begin the fast! I personally believe fasting with others is so much easier AND a lot more fun. This allows for success! Once you take food out & you begin drinking juice your body receives a much needed break, because your body is not having to spend energy on digesting foods. With this time, your body can go about repairing old injuries, congested or overwhelmed organs, cleansing, repairing, healing. It is the fastest way to heal because your body is being given an environment where it can actually do it’s job of staying on top of it’s tasks! However, it often has backlog to deal with first because we are generally in the habit of eating too much food, eating when we aren’t hungry or eating foods that are not healing to our system.

What are the challenges of fasting? Depending on what our lifestyle has been like leading up to our first or next fast, will often determine our experience. We can however support our bodies by reducing certain foods & drink in the lead up to a fast to gently ease our way into it. Cutting wheat, dairy, meat, sugar, alcohol & caffeine begins a gentle detox in itself. I created a video here last year about the prep phase. Then once we step into a committed juice fast our body can really get to work! As I said depending on how our lifestyle has been & also how our body’s detox pathways are working will depend on what we experience during a fast. BUT the environment in which we fast is a huge factor as well! On my fasting retreat I prioritise the best possible environment & schedule so that there is connection with uplifting people, engagement of your mind during learning sessions & engagement of your senses with time in the sun & nature. It’s not just about eliminating food - it is so much more! I also ensure that where possible participants are encouraged to do enemas to really support their detox & cleanse. This reduces any detox symptoms & allows the body to release at a deeper level.

Should I do it with support? I recommend that if you don’t do a group fast you should definitely tee up an accountability buddy or friend so that you have someone to check in with along the journey. I also offer support for one on one clients via Zoom/Skype or in person if we are in the same town. It really does need to be tailored to the individual, which is why I feel it is so important to work with a practitioner who has a lot of experience with fasting & assessing individual needs. I have been fasting since 2009 (10 years) and am fortunate to have worked alongside Tyler Tolman at his 7 & 30 day fasts in Bali. This gave me a lot of insight & knowledge to be able to support individuals with their specific needs. It really is so much more about how to create the right environment & support than it is about what we are taking away (food). If done correctly fasting can actually be a joyful experience. How to prep your body for babies

Hi ladies,

The time prior to conception fascinates me!  It can be a challenging time.  A time of apprehension, particularly for those with a perfectionist streak!  (My hand is up!).  Am I doing everything I can?  Is this the right detox?  Should I be...A, B or C?!! Arghhh!

I want to take the pressure off and give you one easy thing you can start doing. One thing that will ADD nourishment to your body, tone your organs, nourish your stressed out nervous system, clear your skin up, support your liver and more. One thing I strongly believe in is ADDing goodness in, not taking away. By adding nutrition and nourishment we end up crowding out those things that don't serve our body.  

Herbs are one way of adding nourishment to our bodies and by placing them in food (hot drinks, smoothies, dinner, sprinkled on breakfast), we are also adding nutrition at the same time. It is as easy way to tone, detox, cleanse and support out body. Powdered herbs are a great way of adding some supportive herbs in.  By keeping your body toned and your organs in tip top shape our body is easily able to stay on top of the day to day stressors, without getting too far behind, then feeling like "oh my gosh I think I need to go on a one week retreat in Thailand to give back to my body!".  Don't get me wrong, sometimes these tunes up are needed - but we can save those for another discussion.

He She Wu: This guy is perfect for supporting your adrenals. It is a tonic herb, meaning it tones organs in the body and therefore has life extending capacity. If you are a coffee drinker at the moment, consider adding a teaspoon to your coffee, so that you are not draining your adrenals while enjoying your coffee. By adding herbs your coffee becomes an elixir. Who wants to wake up and brew an elixir each morning?! ...ME! If you wake tired, you may also decide to better yet, ditch the coffee and brew a He She Wu cuppa with hot water and honey.

Chaga: Such a powerful antioxidant! Chaga is grown on Birch trees. It is also an adaptogenic herb and assists the body's natural capacity to resist stress. Wow! Who doesn't want that?! We've all got a lot or a little stress in our lives, right? It's damaging. So use this support tool! Chaga is also great for combating viruses and free radicals (damaging our cells and DNA). You may choose to simply add 1 tsp to water, steep for 5mins, then add some honey and enjoy. I love to add a dash of CocoQuench to mine :)

Beauty Blend: This baby is a detox blend. When we support our liver and detoxification organs we improve our skin. From the inside out. With a host of antioxidants, minerals and vitamin C this combination contains goji berry, longan berry, schizandra and micro-ground pearl powder. Wow! Beautiful alright. 1. You can place 1 tsp in a mug with boiling water, let it steep for 5mins, then add a dash of dairy-free mylk and a bit of honey. You may choose to mix 2 herbs together?!  Another elixir you may choose to create is a delicious hot cacao drink/hot chocolate or adding them to your coffee. Sometimes I also just let my brew steep and cool - drinking it cold or even iced. I loved the bitterness.

2. You can add 1tsp to your smoothie or home made 100% blended banana/berry/mango ice cream?!

3. There is nothing stopping you from sprinkling these on your chia pudding or quinoa porridge for breakfast or over your dinner of a night.

Did you say to put oil in my mouth?

Good afternoon readers!

What a sunny Thursday it is here in Cairns.  This weather is gorgeous!

I want to take some time to explain what oil pulling is and its benefits, as I have written posts on my Seeds Of Health Facebook page and commented on it in previous blog posts.  But, I realise that it is not common knowledge to some people and perhaps even a little weird?!  Fair enough too.  But don’t judge anything until you try it, I believe.  I came across it 2 years ago and have enjoyed using the technique regularly since then, in my morning routine.

The idea behind oil pulling is to draw toxins out of the body – therefore assisting with both acute and chronic health concerns.  The health of our mouth has a huge impact on the rest of the body.  Your mouth also provides an indication as to what is happening in your body – be it visible in the health of your gums, cavities in your teeth, scallops on the edge of your tongue, the colour of your tongue, bad breath, etc.  They all provide clues.

Oil pulling is a effective and economical way to target a whole host of these health concerns – all with a simple 5-20 swish of oil each morning.  “Your mouth harbours hundreds of species of bacteria, viruses and fungi…” (Fife, 2008).  With a simple cut from flossing your teeth or perhaps the occurrence of gingivitis, ulcers, etc. these bacteria, virus and fungi can enter the bloodstream – with the potential to create inflammation, havoc and disease in the body.  It is therefore important to not only boost your immune system but also keep your oral health in tip top condition.

Oil pulling has the ability to freshen your breath, create healthier gums, whiter teeth and protect against chronic health concerns such as arthritis, headaches, knee pain, constipation, eczema, PMS, you name it!  Due to its ability to target the whole body, by drawing toxins to the oil and out, once the oil is removed from the mouth (spat out).

It is interesting to note in Dr Fife’s book that Dr Weston A. Price in the early 1900’s knew the important link between oral health and other health concerns in the body.   The process of a root canal involves the decayed tooth having the soft centre drilled out, disinfected and the cavity filled with a hard rubber like material, before the tooth is sealed and capped.  However, the decayed matter is not always 100% removed and this is where problems can arise, as the tooth seems to always remain infected.  He notes that once root canal teeth are removed other health concerns like chronic arthritis also clear up due to the infection not invading the bloodstream, continuously.  Fascinating!

So…I recommend that you give it a go!  Another challenge for you   I love to give you homework and things to work on…that improve your health!

Upon waking, before hydrating with 1L of water, take 1tsp-1tbsp of coconut oil or sesame oil and swish it around in your mouth for 5-20minutes.  The coconut oil will turn white.  Do not swallow the oil, simply spit it out in to the garden and use the remaining bit of oil on your lips to moisturise your lips.  You can choose to do a number of things during this time, read a book, meditate, do a breathing exercise, listen to your favourite music and dance, go for a walk, hang out the washing, etc, unless you are happy to sit in stillness and wake up slowly watching the trees blow in breeze   All of these choices are perfect.

I recently learnt at a yoga class that coconut oil can be cooling to the body, so if you are a Vata constitution or simply feel the cold I would recommend sesame oil.  I have not managed to purchase any yet from the health food store, but it is on my list for this afternoon.  I am not sure how the sesame oil changes after oil pulling but I am wanting to give it a go!  I will report back in the comments.

Oil Pulling Therapy by Bruce Fife is such an interesting read!  I highly recommend it for anyone wanting to know more!  I am happy to lend my copy out for short periods, otherwise grab your own.  Empower yourself with knowledge.

It is a fabulous idea to incorporate this practice into your morning routine and note how you feel each day in your journal.  Do it consistently for 2 weeks and note how your gums become healthier, your teeth whiten, your breath becomes fresher and both acute and chronic illness begin to clear up as the toxins are pulled from the body.

I have just arrived home from Koh Samui, Thailand after doing a 2 week pranayama yoga retreat. 

At the centre, Samahita, there was a herbal steam room available which I was able to use as often as I liked.  I did try & do exactly that as I knew the benefits were fantastic.  Since my last juice fast 2 months ago & leading up to leaving for Thailand I had been going weekly to a sauna in Palm Cove with a friend, so I enjoyed the fact that I could continue this.

Sweating is a mechanism to cool the body, however deep sweating where the core body temperature of a person is raised, allows many toxins like heavy metals to be excreted from the body.  It also helps to remove bacteria & dead skin cells keeping the skin working well & looking fresh & beautiful.   According to Dr Ben H Douglas, the nutrients & minerals from sweat & the pumping of blood around the skin help to maintain the collagen structure of the skin.

Our skin is our largest organ and therefore needs to be taken care of & not forgotten.  It behaves in a very similar way to the liver – detoxing and cleansing our body.  We cannot forget to remember to skin brush, exfoliate, gwasha (a mix of pure alcohol & bicarb soda which cleanses the pores and if followed by the application of coconut oil on the skin allows fantastic vitamin D absorption) & avoid nasty chemical laden moisturises.  Coconut oil is a fantastic moisturiser.

Not only do saunas remove toxins & heavy metals they also burn calories (as the process of sweating burns calories), aide in deeper sleep (when your body temperature is raised in the late evening it will fall just before bed assisting slumber), relieve stress (by relaxing the bodies muscles, improving circulation & stimulating the release of endorphins) & help to keep our largest organ (our skin) healthy & happy.

My sauna visits initially started out as a social catch up, however now that I have gained more knowledge about the benefits of them it has become something that I really look forward to & know that it is doing my body good.  

There are a couple of different types of saunas, be that a steam room or infra red sauna, however they all work on the same philosophy.  The one in the picture below was the herbal steam room I enjoyed in Thailand.  It had eucalyptus oil added to the steam creating greater cleansing of the respiratory system and offering antibacterial properties.  

If you live in the Cairns area, there is a sauna out at Palm Cove at the Novotel that is really cheap to go to & very accessible for regular visits if you don’t mind the drive north.  Others are available in town however I’m not sure on their cleanliness.
