10 tips for a healthy and stress-free Silly Season

Janelle November 30, 2015

There are plenty of ways to embrace the SILLY SEASON.  It actually can be a really relaxing low key time to connect with family and friends, read books, swim, relax and spend little.  The Festive Season can indeed be HEALTHFUL, STRESS FREE and an opportunity to CONSUME CONSCIOUSLY, shop locally and vote with your dollar - so you don't end up looking like the lady above!

This Christmas I am heading off to Sydney to spend time with family and friends.  I can't wait to slow down and enjoy the simple things.  I am genuinely looking forward to doing some extra meditation, reading my 5 books which I have on the go!, swimming in the beautiful southern beaches, making wholesome food with my fav foodie cousins, watching some great flicks on FMTV and enjoying the company of those who matter most.  Below are some suggestions of ways you can introduce alternatives, vote with your dollar and slow down during the silly season - allowing you to nourish your body over the Christmas break.

1. Swap alcohol for soda water mixed with 2 drops of Slim & Sassy (a Doterra essential oil which has a zesty flavour and promotes feelings of self love with the added bonus of healthy weight loss - I've been trailing it for the last couple of months & feel great in my skin!
Or perhaps you would like to make some iced tea?  Have a look at my recent post here.  Or how about jazzing up your water with mint, basil, lime, strawberries, etc.

2. Be comfortable saying "No" when the communal plate is being passed around if you don't feel like that piece of cheese, that extra glass of champagne or that piece of chocolate.  You don't need to feel uncomfortable or rude, just simply say no thank you and move on with the conversation.  You'll feel better in your skin! :)

3. Dance and move in ways that light you up...dance in the kitchen with your kids, gardening, swimming in the ocean or laps in the pool, bushwalking or yoga.  MAKE time to move over the holidays, be it gentle or vigorous.

4. Bring your own delicious and wholesome treats to Christmas parties (try this festive cake!) or make the best decision possible on the menu.  It's all about balance, so don't get hung up or stressed about having a blow out - but do remember that you have a choice.  Check in with your body and see what you feel like.

5. Vote with your dollar by shopping locally and supporting the little guy (try The Greenhouse on Spence St in Cairns, local markets, gift vouchers at Henna Temple, Organic facial, a Naturopath consultation with myself for the new year or a Pantry Detox over the holidays while you have a little extra time.  Another great present is reusable glad wrap made from cloth and coated in beeswax.  I LOVE mine!  I bought them from the Mossman markets but you can also order them online from the makers in Byron Bay.

6. Drink water!  Stay hydrated.  Buy a water filter if need be.  Spice up your water with strawberries, mint, lime, etc.  Make iced teas!
Or buy a soda stream!

7. Make your own gifts - I have been enjoying making home made chai, recipe on my blog.  This will make a great gift for others for Christmas.  We also do a Secret Santa at Christmas time between all of our close and extended family.  This is a great way of giving quality gifts, no one missing out and everyone spending less.  Remember Christmas is about coming together to celebrate the year that has been - not how many gifts you can buy another.

9. Rest, breathe, relax and read - find a good book and dive in!  Or purchase a mindfulness colouring in book and simply surrender.  Take time out to journal amongst the mayhem.

10. Start your day in a positive way!  Perhaps it's some yoga, stretching, a walk, a smoothie instead of that bowl of museli, a cup of home made chai instead of a coffee, a good book instead of jumping on Facebook first up...
Or perhaps you want to create an inspiration board on Pinterest.  It's a fabulous way to feel inspired and get creative!

I am wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a healthy and rejuvenating break.  Please contact me if you have any questions regarding your health or want to book in for a consultation or attend my upcoming workshop this Saturday.  I look forward to seeing you all soon in my new central location - 218 McLeod St, Cairns.

Be well,

Janelle x
